Gangbusters and Gato are two Bozeman artists working together in very different mediums. Potter Ryan Mitchell of Gangbusters Pottery and painter Allie “Gato” Buck joined forces to create a series of functional and decorative work. Ryan is a potter and a teacher who long ago fell in love with the marriage of beauty and utility in ceramics. Allie is a painter of fantastical landscapes and quirky critters. Allie’s fanciful drawings wrap around the sleek forms of Ryan’s cups and bowls, proving that sometimes the best canvas is not a canvas at all. Each piece is one of a kind and completely hand made. Allie and Ryan have worked and taught in the same community for years, drawn to each other with their own spontaneous and child like styles. Ryan created the ceramic pieces; wheel throwing and hand building each one. He handed them off to Allie, who used each object as a 3D canvas for creating her tiny, hand painted worlds. The end product is more than the sum of its parts, a unique expression of two creative voices.
